otonVPN — A Privacy-First VPN with Secure Core and Strong Encryption Keywords ProtonVPN, VPN, Secure Core, WireGuard, no-logs policy, Swiss privacy, VPN review, privacy tools Description ProtonVPN is a privacy-focused virtual private network from Proton AG (Switzerland) that combines strong encryption, Secure Core multi-hop routing, open-source clients, and a generous free tier to protect users’ online privacy and security. Content ProtonVPN has established itself as a serious choice for privacy-minded users. Built by the team behind Proton Mail and headquartered in Switzerland, ProtonVPN emphasizes legal protections, transparency, and technical safeguards to minimize tracking and surveillance. Privacy and jurisdiction One of ProtonVPN’s strongest selling points is its Swiss base. Switzerland’s privacy-friendly laws and neutral status make it a favorable jurisdiction for a VPN provider. ProtonVPN publishes a clear no-logs policy and operates transparently about how it handles user data. The company also makes much of its software open source, allowing independent inspection of client code. Architecture and security features ProtonVPN uses modern, secure protocols (including WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2) with robust encryption. It runs a Secure Core network — a multi-hop architecture that routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries before exiting to the wider internet, reducing the risk that an adversary monitoring a single server can trace activity back to a user. Many ProtonVPN servers are diskless (RAM-only), meaning nothing is written to permanent storage and all data is wiped on reboot. Additional safety features include a system-wide kill switch, secure DNS, and support for Tor over VPN (allowing access to the Tor network without running a separate Tor client). Split tunneling is available on certain apps, giving users control over which apps use the VPN. Performance and usability ProtonVPN has native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, and offers browser guides and manual setup instructions for routers. WireGuard support improves speeds and latency compared with older protocols. The service provides specialized servers for streaming and P2P file sharing, though exact performance will vary by plan and location. Plans and transparency ProtonVPN offers a free tier that provides basic access with limited servers but no data cap — a useful option for users who want to test the service or need occasional VPN protection. Paid plans unlock faster speeds, access to the full server network, Secure Core, and advanced features. Proton AG has submitted its infrastructure and code to independent audits and publishes transparency reports and warrant canaries to reinforce trust. Who should consider ProtonVPN ProtonVPN is well suited for users who prioritize privacy, want an audit-friendly, open-source approach, and appreciate strong legal protections. It’s also a good option for those who want a reputable free VPN without a data cap. Users looking for the absolute cheapest or most feature-heavy VPN for niche router setups may want to compare offerings, but for privacy-first consumers ProtonVPN remains a top contender. In short, ProtonVPN balances strong technical safeguards with clear privacy commitments, making it a reliable choice for secure, private browsing.#1#
